Are You Buying a Commercial Building?

6/27/2019 (Permalink)

If you are starting a new business or maybe even looking to move a current business to bigger or better location you need to first inspect it. Most people go in and just start looking to see if they like the location and the building in general.

The first time looking at a building it has a star quality of being something new and it is easy to gloss over anything that could be troublesome down the road.

Once you like the place and its' location it is always good to go back for a second look and be much more skeptical to see anything that could cause issue down the road.

Somethings to look for include growth, any unpleasant smells, stains, old carpet, paint, or ceiling tiles. All of these things have potential for trouble down the road. It is always good to have them checked before signing to own or lease the building, even renters have some rights.

Common Hazards in Commercial Properties

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

There are many things with a commercial property that can arise and cause issue. There are also a few things that you can do as an owner or a property manager to keep your risks low and prevent possible damages.

  1. Automatic Sprinkler System - Having an automatic sprinkler system installed can quickly reduce any damages caused by a fire erupting during anytime of the day or night.
  2. Upkeep of maintenance - Any broken window or crack in drywall can quickly lead to an issue and become a long term event if not taken care of.
  3. Lose debris - Having any lose debris or garbage piled up can lead to fines, damage, and even attract critters. Keeping all areas neat and tidy will easily reduce these risks.
  4. Dust Build-up - Make sure to keep all ducts and laundry vents clean. Best practice for a commercial building is to have both cleaned annually to keep the maintenance up on them.
These are some of the most common hazards known to commercial properties but also some of the easiest to reduce the risk on. Some of these items SERVPRO can even help and take care of. For your annual duct and vent cleaning give us a call to schedule today!

Local Aldi's Fire 12/27/2018

1/9/2019 (Permalink)

A freezer unit in the store had a mechanical issue causing it to catch fire in the Aldi's grocery store on this particular Thursday morning. Luckily no one was in the store when it happened.

When crews arrived on Thursday morning there was smoke coming from the building letting the workers know there was something going on. The power company was notified but never needed to shut off the power.

As a result of the fire, crews worked diligently to clean up the damage and placed equipment to also improve air quality in the building so that it was safe for both workers and customers.

In order to maintain the stores normal working hours crews worked after hours to stay out of the way of workers and customers during the day.

The management team in the store was very happy with the work done and will be returning for any other damage in the future.

Unexpected commercial water damage can occur rapidly with no warning. When an emergency strikes, call on us at SERVPRO New Smyrna Beach- Titusville to launch a rapid response with a team of experienced commercial water responders waiting to handle your emergency. Time is of the essence when predicting the sustainability of your commercial property.

Severe weather and hurricane force winds can prematurely weather the life of the roof. When trees fall over during a storm and land on your building's roof, underlying water damage may occur. Over time, a commercial roof can develop a significant leak leading to flooding. Flooding can lead to water damage or destruction of computers, printers, and other electronic expensive equipment in the office.

We recognize that your company's efforts may not be able to be replaced when documents are unable to be salvaged. Our team of experts are available to make an initial assessment of the water damage, identify the source of the flooding, and develop a restoration plan. We will work with your insurance company and provide copies of our assessments, damage report, and restorative plan of action.

Hurricane Preparation for Commercial Businesses

9/28/2018 (Permalink)

In business, preparation is a vital component to survival. This is true for every aspect of your operation and while business owners prepare for all manner of financial upheavals, one area they tend to neglect is property damage – in particular property damage related to severe weather such as a hurricane, tropical storm, or tornado.

While you can’t control where a tropical storm or hurricane touches down, you can develop some disaster recovery plans that can help mitigate property damage and downtime due to the severe weather associated with this tropical activity. For starters, we recommend gathering your most valued employees and coming up with a disaster recovery strategy. Figure out crucial tasks to undertake before a hurricane strikes, and determine who will be responsible for them.

Typical disaster preparation strategies include backing up critical data and sensitive client information. Make sure you keep a back-up of your information off-site or on an outsourced server in the event your building receives critical damage.

Just like you would prepare your home for a hurricane, you should also take the same precautions, where possible, to secure your business to protect it from wind and water damage. Putting up storm shutters or boarding up windows is a good start. You should also secure or store any outdoor items on your property that may become a safety hazard when gale force winds descend.

As we noted above, property damage is only part of the concern when it comes to a hurricane. Loss of electricity and structural damage can cause downtime for your business. This downtime can last anywhere from a few hours to weeks – or longer. Having a secondary location where you can set up a temporary business can help you continue operations. If possible, you may want to consider setting up a system whereby employees can work remotely. This could be a cheaper alternative to opening a second office. Just make sure your critical information and network access is secure and only available to appropriate team members.

Along the same token, you want to keep the lines of communication open with your employees, vendors, and clients. Prepare your customers for any alternate contact information or locations, and if you suspect a slow-down in service, be forthcoming and let your clients know what to expect.

Finally, at the start of hurricane season, meet with your insurance agent and review your property and business insurance to make sure you are fully covered for any realistic scenarios. If you do experience property damage, content damage, or need the assistance of a disaster recovery service, SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach-Titusville will help mitigate your losses and be an invaluable resource to get your business back up and running.

What to Do in the Aftermath of a Hurricane

6/28/2018 (Permalink)

After a hurricane or tropical storm has moved on from your area, make sure the local news has given the okay to venture outside. If there is any indication that the storm is not entirely out of your area, wait a while longer, as hurricanes can often spawn tornadoes and hail even after they have left your region. Also, don’t be fooled by the eye of the hurricane. Depending upon the size of the storm wall, you will experience anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour of no storm activity. Never venture out when the eye of the hurricane is passing over, as you can quickly get caught in the storm once it picks back up again.

Once you are certain it is safe to venture outdoors, check the area for any downed power lines. If you find them, report them to the local power company and steer clear of them. Avoid puddles and standing water, as they can house hidden dangers and safety hazards.

Next, inspect your home for any structural damage. Damaged walls, collapsing roofs, and floods are particularly dangerous, and if you encounter them, you will want to evacuate the premises immediately. Document any damage with your phone or a camera. This includes property damage, as well as content damage. Hurricanes often result in water damage and flood damage, and may result in mold and mildew, as well as fire damage.

Once you have taken note of any damage and your family is safe and secure, your next step should be to call your insurance company and a storm damage restoration company, such as the catastrophe remediation professionals at SERVPRO NSB-Titusville  not only can they help repair your property and its contents, they can also help guide you through the insurance claims process and develop a safety plan for any future catastrophic events.

We are Here for Your Business Duct Cleaning Needs

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO New Smyrna- Titusville, we are here for all your commercial cleaning needs. While some smaller commercial buildings utilize similar or even identical equipment found in residential construction, larger commercial properties will be serviced by more complex machinery. Keeping a multi-story commercial building heated in the winter and cooled in the summer requires very large air handling equipment that moves tremendous volumes of air. This machinery, combined with complicated duct work, requires highly trained and experienced professionals to ensure not only the cleanliness of the system, but also the integrity of the system itself.

Additionally, many large commercial buildings utilize systems that may include turning vanes, fresh air intake, mixing boxes, filter boxes, and very large heating/cooling coils. All these components must be treated with care and precision as damage to any of these may result in a deficiency of the system that will appear after the cleaning.

We are a local company that is available to respond to your request for service quickly, and we will work diligently until the work is complete. To set up an appointment with our crew, call us today at (321) 264-0205.

Steps To Take After A Commercial Loss

11/27/2017 (Permalink)

Office commercial space affected by flood damage.

Hopefully your business will never experience a commercial water damage. However, in case you do, it is important to know how to handle the situation before it happens so you are prepared if and when it does. Flood damage can cause structural concerns and several other issues, so there are steps to take immediately afterward so you can protect your business and employees.

Shut Off Potential Hazards
If it is safe to do so, you will want to make sure that you turn off any electricity to the affected areas. You don’t want them to be turned on before you are ready, which risks mixing electricity and water or making a gas leak before the flood damage can be corrected.

When you call in professionals for help, the remediation company will also have necessary tools. Such as a digital moisture meter, to find any signs of hidden moisture, such as behind walls, to make sure that they can completely dry out your business properly and avoid any mold from growing.

Make Sure to Protect Yourself
If you have to walk in any flood waters, wear sturdy shoes which will protect your feet from hidden debris in the water which could trip or cut you. Hip waders are a good idea as well, since flood waters can be contaminated, even if to the naked eye they look clean. Look out for snakes or other critters which have been displaced by the flood, and do not ever put your hands anywhere you cannot see first.

When all else fails, and you are not sure about going into your building, wait for the professional remediation company to arrive. They are aware of all the procedures and steps to take to keep themselves and others safe, plus will have all the protective gear to wear as they are checking everything out for you.

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures!
Make sure and document as much of the damage to your commercial property as thoroughly as you can. This will help you out when you are filing your claim with your insurance company for the water damage created by the flood. When you do re-enter your business, get photographic evidence of the damage that was left behind by the water, plus any water that is still there. Document all that you can and then speak with your insurance company in a prompt manner.

Salvage What you Can
Mold damage is very common after your business has experienced commercial water damage. Mold only needs about twenty-four to forty-eight hours to start growing. SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach- Titusville can assist you in this, but you will need to throw away anything that has been saturated for over forty-eight hours and figure out on a case to case basis what else can be saved or needs to be thrown away. Rugs and padding will always need to be tossed if they are damaged by flood waters, and you may need to get rid of things like insulation or drywall as well if they have become flood damaged. Any food which has been affected will also need to be thrown away immediately if it’s come into contact with the flood waters, as the water from floods can carry plenty of contamination.

SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach- Titusville is a professional and local company in Volusia County, who will quickly respond to your flood damage needs. When you experience such an event in Volusia County, we have the experience and resources to help. Contact us any time at (386) 447-2202.

Persevering Past Fire Damage In Your Edgewater Garden Center

Garden Center Fire Is Not from Hot Chili Peppers

Prevent Damage by Fire with SERVPRO's Help in Edgewater

Fire damage excludes no type of business, including the thriving landscaping, gardening, and honey industry on Florida’s Atlantic coast. Indoor and outdoor nursery and shopping areas need assessment and assistance from the professionals at SERVPRO after fire moves through your commercial campus. Ensure safety of staff and customers while restoring your garden center quickly.

A garden center has many characteristics ready to erupt into significant fire damage in Edgewater. Greenhouses use gas or electric heaters to keep plants warm, risking a spark's igniting mulch or wooden beds or supports. Wiring for grow lights, or automatic sprinkler systems, eventually show wear from sun, heat, wind, and humidity, creating the possibility of a blaze. Dead, dried out plant matter, compost piles, and wood frame buildings all provide quick kindling should a fire start. Indoor office and sales areas are usually close by, threatened by an outdoor wildfire that jumps to a building. Nurseries in this area are frequently part of a growing honey producing industry, with hives and beekeeping equipment as well as bulk or bottled honey for sale on your work site.

Take the time to protect your investment in the gardening and honey business by developing a Ready Protection Plan. Ask “which SERVPRO is near me?” Then make the call to have a no-obligation assessment of your garden and landscaping operations. Work with an experienced and fire damage industry standards trained project manager from our headquarters to plot out the very best course of action when your honey production and garden center suffers from a fire. Commercial Water Removal in New Smyrna Beach is the Quickest Way to Repair Office Ceiling Tiles

1/18/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Keeps New Smyrna Beach Ceilings Dry and Offices Open

SERVPRO Works Fast to Keep Your Business Up and Running

Many businesses in this region of Florida have experienced flooding. In fact, it was only last October that Hurricane Matthew blew through town and filled hundreds of buildings with water. So, dealing with excess moisture is nothing new for the area.

Nevertheless, the restoration of water damaged businesses involves much hard work. Flooding can be particularly devastating for offices because the loss of paper records can cause havoc with customers, vendors, and suppliers. This issue is why commercial water removal in New Smyrna Beach needs to be arranged as soon as a problem has been identified.

Often, further damage is caused when water trapped in the roof (after a storm) leaks through ceiling tiles. Fortunately, the experts at SERVPRO can dry out damaged ceiling materials in a matter of days, if they are salvageable.

The Decision to Restore
At SERVPRO, we treat all damaged items with courtesy and respect, whether they are in an office or a retail store. However, every building contains a wide range of materials, and some are easier to dry and clean than others. In the interest of fairness and good business sense, our technicians always offer their opinion on whether or not an item is worth restoring. It is then up to you, and your insurance company to decide how to proceed.

This is relevant to ceiling tiles because they are easy to dry, but water intrusion can end up leaving unsightly brown stains. Some business owners choose to replace the roof of an affected room in its entirety after space has been thoroughly dried out. On the other hand, as ceiling tiles are fitted segmentally, we can also remove the stained pieces and dry and clean the rest. The size of the affected area, the quality of the tiles and the suspension hardware, all have a voice in the scope of the water damage.

The Drying Process
Once the technicians have had a good look at the damage, they will be able to formulate a plan for drying and restoring the ceiling. The first thing that they will do is remove the tiles because they can dry faster in a temperature controlled area. Also, if there is moisture present in the roof of the tiles, it needs to be eliminated first.

Fortunately, office spaces are usually are an open floor plan and relatively easy to get around. Lifting and positioning dehumidifiers inside the ceiling cavity should be fairly straightforward. The process can be complicated somewhat if there is much ductwork to dry, but we can work around it or clean HVAC systems with deodorizers and fans if necessary. Typically, with significant water intrusion above the ceiling, the entire infrastructure requires an evaluation to determine the degree of restoration.

Restoring water damaged ceiling tiles is just one of the tasks which SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach/Titusville deals with on a regular basis. We are a highly experienced water damage repair company, and we are based in your area. Call us 24/7 at (321) 264-0205 for immediate help.

Difficult to Detect Damages in Water Damaged Businesses

11/30/2016 (Permalink)

Trust SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach-Titusville to restore your commercial property from water damage "Like it never even happened."

How Difficult Is It to Detect Water Damage on Business Properties?

When water damage hits a retail store, it can, in some cases, seem light enough to allow doors to remain open without a restoration process. The drive to make this decision is understandable, as the expenses of a restoration can be enough to close doors in up to half of all commercial damage cases. However, waiting for restorations when they needed can multiply costs sky-high, and it's best to at least request advice and a quote about potential damages, even if you aren't sure if they're serious. Here are some more serious types of water damage that you may miss before calling SERVPRO.

Odors

Many cases of commercial water damage in Titusville involve the cleanup and removal of strong odors. While these may be apparent immediately after the damage has been inflicted, some odors may take days or even weeks to become noticeable. In these slow-developing cases, the smells may also be key indicators of more disastrous and long-term damages, such as mold growth or metal oxidation. Advanced sensors and detectors like those used by SERVPRO can help to identify these odors even if they are too minute for you to notice.

Mold and Fungi

Mold is a slow but costly type of damage, usually growing in the shadows or in tight fits. Once mold has taken root, it is costly to remove, which is one of the key reasons why a rapid response to water damage is essential in mitigating further costs. In addition to mold, other fungi including mushrooms can also begin to grow out of sight, releasing odors and potentially causing damage to whatever they grow on.

Rotting Material

Some materials, including wood and some types of metal, will begin to rot or dissolve if exposed to water for a long enough time. Over months or years without treatment, this could lead to critical failure in your company's structure.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources

SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach-Titusville knows how to spot these damages early on, possible with our years of expertise and top-of-the-line equipment. Call us at (321) 264-0205 to request help in your water damaged business.

These devices can prevent fires or at least limit the extent of damage that the fire has on the building. However, even a small fire can generate a significant degree of unwanted smoke. This smoke can leave behind unwanted odors and a greasy residue. Additionally, the smoke damage can destroy valuables, documents, and electronics.

Why You Should Never Do A DIY Project

In many cases, commercial business owners want to get rid of all smoke damage as soon as possible. For this reason, they often attempt to complete the DIY process on their own. Don't make this mistake. Several health hazards result when smoke damage is present, and most business owners don't know what these hazards are. For this reason, you could expose yourself to illness and injury if you attempt to complete the restoration process on your own. Thus instead of attempting to do the work yourself, you should focus on finding the ideal smoke damage restoration company to assist you.

Commercial Fires: Knowledge is the Key to Prevention

Keep Chemicals Away From Water Heaters

Some Fires Can Be Prevented While Others Are Beyond an Owner's Control

Commercial fire damage in Titusville and throughout the United States can cause significant property damage, and it can also have a dramatic effect on your emotions and finances. Knowing the most common causes of commercial fires allows you to take a proactive approach to fire safety and decrease the risk of fire and minimize the amount of fire damage to your commercial building.

Approximately 80,000 commercial fires break out in the United States every year. They are primarily attributed to the following:

HUMAN ERROR

In many cases, a fire is nothing more than a simple mistake that could have been prevented. For example, a coffee pot that has been unknowingly left on, electrical equipment being used incorrectly, or failing to put out a cigarette completely can quickly and easily result in a massive fire that can cause commercial fire damage. To prevent this, be sure your employees are properly trained on how to use electrical equipment. Also, if you have employees who smoke, make certain they have a designated area outside to smoke with a secure spot to extinguish their cigarettes. This could cut down on your staff trying to sneak in a smoke break inside the building.

ARSON

While arson most often occurs in abandoned buildings, arsonists could strike anywhere. Whether your building is empty or a buzzing hive of activity, be sure your building has a working automatic sprinkler system to help limit the amount of damage.

IMPROPER STORAGE

This most often results when a potentially flammable material is kept too close to a heat source, such as a water heater or furnace. Always, be sure that your workers know where they should and should not store items. This also pertains to space heaters. If you have employees who use them, be sure they are a safe distance from curtains, chairs, and anything else that has the potential to catch fire.

FAULTY EQUIPMENT/ WIRING

Faulty equipment includes everything from overloading extension cords, using frayed power cords, or installing a light bulb with a wattage that is too high to having outdated wiring and breaker boxes in your building. If you do not have enough plugins, hire an electrician to install more. At the same, routinely assess all the electrical cords in your building for damage, while also checking light bulbs to ensure they are not over the recommended wattage. Finally, schedule routine electrical inspections with a licensed electrician to ensure your wiring stays up to code.

Fire Suppressant Sprinkler Systems Can Cause Major Water Damage to Your Business

Contact SERVPRO for New Smyrna Beach Commercial Water Damage Restoration

If you run a business, you probably don't often think about commercial water damage in New Smyrna Beach. After all, you have to manage employees, boost sales and control your inventory. However, when water damage occurs, it can throw the rest of your business into disarray unless you react quickly with skilled restoration services.

Water damage happens more often than most business owners realize. While most people think of water damage in association with flooding, there are many other ways such damage can occur. There can be leaks in the roof or walls, which lead to problems. In other cases, the damage is caused by burst pipes or other plumbing mishaps.

No matter what the cause may be, water damage can be an insidious threat to your business. Not only does the water need to be cleaned up, but it can cause damage to the furniture and underlying structures in your commercial property. Water can ruin carpets, drywall and other interior features. You may have to replace desks, chairs, electronics, light fixtures and more.

New Smyrna Beach water damage is even more troublesome because cleanup and restoration take time. Time is often one thing that businesses cannot afford to lose. The cost of restoration is already pressing enough, and few companies can afford to have their business closed for long before the loss of revenue starts to impact their bottom line. Because of this, it is essential to begin the restoration process as soon as possible.

It is not just a matter of getting it done fast. It is important that a reputable New Smyrna Beach commercial water damage company address the matter appropriately and thoroughly. Water damage can lead to ongoing problems if it is not treated by highly skilled professionals. All the damage must be accounted for to prevent problems with mold in the future. If treatment is not accomplished thoroughly, the cleanup may have to be repeated sooner as opposed to later.

Business owners should also realize that skilled technicians may be able to salvage more than they expect. Specialized experts can handle damaged furniture, treating the fabric and upholstery until it is fit for business use again. Restoring can save business owners plenty of money as they may not have to replace all of the affected furniture after the incident.

Another concern with commercial water damage in New Smyrna Beach is the smell. Even after water removal, the odor can linger for weeks or months. This musty smell is unpleasant to work in, and it can be a deterrent for customers. For this reason, always be sure to hire a company with IICRC-technicians. These skilled experts know how to eliminate odors so your business will look and smell fresh again.

Fortunately, the team at SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach-Titusville can provide comprehensive service for any commercial water damage.
