How does mold start at your NSB & Titusville properties?

2/2/2023 (Permalink)

Mold causes:

  1. Humidity issues

If you live in a humid area, like on the coast or near a lake or pond, mold is a common issue as its only natural for it to develop with high moisture content in the air. Mold will normally grow in dark closets, under the kitchen sink, and on walls and ceilings.

  1. Accumulation of Condensation

During the wintertime, homes will often have condensation built up on a number of surfaces with the temperature fluctuations. These will often include concrete surfaces, metal piping, brick walls and floor tiles.

If you notice this issue in your home, make sure to allow for proper air flow throughout each room by turning on your HVAC system, opening all doors and even run a few fans throughout the home. If not, these condensation pockets will allow mold to grow and spread throughout the home, consuming the building structure until its removed properly.

  1. Leaking Roof

Old and/or damaged roofing is never a good mix with heavy rain and storms. As moisture will often seep in through small holes and cracks, mold can easily prosper in these areas. Even a slow leak can lead to an accumulation of moisture within your attic or ceiling, which can eventually lead to mold growth on the ceiling boards and on walls.

Be sure to inspect your attic or ceiling tiles of mold or even musty smells as they are often common signs of mold issues.

  1. Poor Ventilation

Just as moisture is the prime ingredient needed for mold growth, poor ventilation will easily allow for the buildup of moisture within the home, allowing mold spores to gather and feed on the building materials.

Stagnant air is also a great environment for mold to thrive, so make sure to get rid of it as quickly as possible. The steam produced from cooking, bathing and appliances also creates humidity, leaving condensation on the walls, floors, ceilings, and other surfaces.

If you remove the moisture from your home, you will reduce the chances of mold.

    1. Home Flooding

Mother Nature certainly never shows any mercy during floods. Floods first destroy your building materials and belongings with water, then a growing fungus eats away at the remains of what’s left.

It’s likely for your home to take days and possibly weeks to dry out after a flood, so mold is very common after suffering mold damage. What makes this situation dangerous is that the mold will irritate a lot of allergies and some cases of mold may be toxic.

Even after your home is completely dried out, it is recommended to bring in a mold testing and mold remediation expert to clear out any remaining mold growth.

      1. Wet and Damp Clothing

If you’ve just ran a load of clothes in the washing machine, take them out to dry right away instead of leaving them in the machine. If the clothes are left to sit for the full day, they can begin to smell like mildew.

Also don’t forget to pick up any damp or wet clothing lying around the house as they create a great living environment for mold to thrive. Always remember to hang up your clothes.

      1. Foundation Dampness

If your home sits on a landscape that slopes away from your home, you may be in trouble for a mold problem. Garden moisture and rainwater can slowly pool and trickle down the foundation of your home, which can also lead to mold issues.

Professional care is often needed in mold Situations. SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach & Titusville is here to rid mold and have your property up to health standards that way you and your friends and family have only the best quality air! We know mold can grow and grow fast so call us now at (321) 264-0205!

A Crack In The Structure

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

In Florida we don't often have to worry about dropping temperatures affecting our area, but this time of year it does get rather cold and highs for us may not even reach into the 60's.

While you may be worried about your plants it is also a good idea to take a look around your home to see if you have any cracks or structural issues on home and get them prepared. Right now it may not be as big of a deal if you have a crack it will be letting warm air out and cold air out in the summer, it could also mean that moisture and humidity will find their way into your home. The longer these issues are left unresolved the more mold and deterioration could happen in your home.

These issues are best taken care of as soon as possible to minimize the risk and keep you and your family safe from the elements.

Have you checked under your sink?

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

Have you checked under your bathroom sink lately? Most of us shove as much stuff as we can underneath our sink and rarely move them to check around and behind them.

When you have that much stuffed underneath your sink it is hard to know if you have a small leak or growth from excess moisture built up.

You should move everything out from underneath the sink at minimum once a month, clean it and check to make sure there is not a build up of moisture or a small leak.

Checking underneath your sink may seem like a small unnecessary thing to do, however they need to be done. If there is a small leak that goes unnoticed it could cause a large issue with mold down the road.

If you happen to find a leak and water or mold damage is apparent give us a call to remediate it or give a quote.

Hiding Places

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Some of the most common questions we get are about mold. They range from "Is this mold?" to "I have mold, can I get rid of it myself?"

In Florida there is dampness everywhere. Mold or growth is fueled by damp conditions. Some of them love the dark and some of the love the light. There are too many types of mold to list in one post.

Most kinds of most will not cause harm, however when combined with optimal conditions the mold can produce toxins. Some of molds favorite places to hide include cabinets, basements and crawl spaces. The most common places mold are found is the breeding ground of moisture in bathrooms and kitchens.

Who can be affected by mold?

Some people are more sensitive to mold than others. Age and general health are two of the biggest factors that can show if you are affected by Mold. Those that are further along in their years or a very young may have a compromised immune system.

Common Places to Check for Growth in your Home

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

Living in Florida where the humidity is always high, it is always important to be constantly checking your home and cleaning to make sure growth is not present. If there is growth present in your home, the sooner you call your local SERVPRO remediator, the sooner the problem can be addressed, contained, and removed. The most common place to look for growth in your home is the bathroom. While it is probably everyone's least favorite place to clean, it is the place that harbors the most germs. The bathroom has the most moisture and the most bacteria that can cause mold when moisture is present. The next place to check for growth is the kitchen. This area of the home also harbors moisture, not as much as the bathroom, but still a god amount with the sink, dishwasher and refrigerator. Make sure to also check your fridge often for expired items to prevent the spread of any moldy items. We now move into the bedroom. If you have any exterior windows and window sills they can build up moisture and collect growth. Additionally in the bedroom we need to check the vents as they can also collect humidity, here in Florida the drastic temperature change from day to night and air to heat can contribute to the issue as well.  Moving through the home to the living, the couch and curtains need to be checked as well. The couch, if covered can collect spores in the fabric. The same thing goes with the curtains throughout the home. If there are any plants kept inside, they will need to be checked. If the soil in the plant is too wet, they can start to grow some unsightly things.  While uncommon in Florida homes, a fireplace and chimney let in the majority of moisture from the outside air and need to be regularly cleaned. If your home has a chimney and/or fireplace it will need to be cleaned regularly to prevent and build up and keep maintained. There are several more places that we can look in a home to find growth but these are the most common. Mold is not 100% preventable, but there are ways to maintain your home and catch it as soon as anything pops up.

What is White Mold?

7/10/2018 (Permalink)

White mold is not a specific type of mold. Many  species of mold may appear white. The species of white mold commonly found in homes are aspergillus, cladosporium, and penicillum. All these molds may also appear gray, green, black or other tints. Moreover, all molds thrive in moist areas where a food source like wood is present.

Generally, it’s not necessary to determine the type of mold you have in your home – all molds have the same negative effects.

Some molds may appear white in their early stages of development. Later, these molds may change color after producing spores. Yet, many molds appear white regardless of age because their spores are not pigmented. The lack of spore pigmentation is caused by the type of material it’s growing on.

Also, white mold appears as powdery and may blend in with the materials it’s growing on, which makes it hard to tell that it’s actually mold.

White Mold vs Mildew and Efflorescence

Sometimes, people confuse white mold with mildew, which may also have a white appearance. However, mildew rarely grows on surfaces other than plants and doesn’t destroy materials. White mold, on the other hand, penetrates the surface of porous materials like wood or drywall and can ruin them.

It’s also common for people to confuse white mold with a substance called efflorescence. It’s a type of salt deposit caused by salty water which seeps through concrete, brick or stone. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind a white crystalline substance that looks similar to white mold.

Unlike white mold though, efflorescence does not pose any health risks and won’t grow or spread.

To tell whether a substance is white mold or efflorescence, just look at the affected surface. If it’s masonry, it’s efflorescence. Also, put some of it into a drop of water and if it dissolves, it’s not mold. Lastly, squeeze some of the substance between your fingers and if it breaks into fine powder, it’s efflorescence.

Is White Mold Dangerous?

All types of mold, including white mold can cause health problems. White mold should be removed as soon as possible to avoid health risks and structural damage. Even milder forms of white mold can endanger your health.

White mold is just one type of mold that can invade your home. Check out information about black mold, and how to remove mold from your home. For mold removal and water damage repair services, contact SERVPRO Of New Smyrna Beach / Titusville.

Mold Is Natural

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

Mold occurs naturally and has been around for a countless number of years like other living things. It is important to take note that dealing with mold can be a nuisance as well as a cause for concern. Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet. Mold spores thrive on moisture and can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed otherwise, the mold may return, and we do not want you to go through this type of situation again as we know how stressful it may be.

Useful Knowledge of Mold

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

Give us a call today. We can help make it "Like it never even happened"

At SERVPRO New Smyrna Beach we can help in any situation including Mold. Here are a few useful facts about it. Mold is a form of fungi that grows in moist dark places. Most dry areas in and outside the home have levels of mold that are not harmful. It is when moist and damp conditions encourage the growth of mold and spores that hazardous conditions can form. Mold will grow on any organic material including drywall, wood plaster, carpeting and ceiling tiles. Mold can grow on brick and block because it is porous and retains moisture. Mold growth can be a variety of textures and colors – black, gray, white, orange, gray-green, pink or purple.

Some molds create a substance called mycotoxins that can affect your health. Mold can spread, and the problem can worsen if not treated by a mold removal professional that is trained to handle hazardous and deadly materials.

The 411 on "Good" Mold

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

The facts behind "good" mold.

Did you know mold and fungi naturally occur in our environment? In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. However, not all fungi is bad! Some fungi produce very useful results. Yeast for instance, is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, even including some alcoholic beverages! There are also other common delicacies that may sound familiar, such as blue cheese (that is a type of mold), and mushrooms that are classified in the fungi category. Can you think of another product of mold? Lifesaving Penicillin otherwise known as penicillin chrysogenum is an actual product of mold! Who would have thought a life saving antibiotic, was in fact mold? Although some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds can present health concerns for some people.

Mold Damage in a Mims Home

Mold Remediation in Mims Takes Many Different Efforts

Remediation of Your Property Against Mold by SERVPRO

Life is relatively relaxed around here on the Indian River. The only thing that usually shakes people up even a little is storm season; with that over, for now, citizens want to enjoy the quiet life for a few months until the tourists start flocking in again. No one wants to think about mold.

It's the right time to think about mold damage though and how it can affect your Mims home. SERVPRO has the experience, skill, and equipment needed to make sure your house, apartment or condo is either free of mold or can help you make it that way. Once you call us, we'll send out an inspector to examine your home for the source and extent of the mold growth. Everything our team does will be documented and available for you to see at any time in the restoration process.

Next, our technicians will isolate the contamination by securing plastic sheeting over every applicable window and doorway. They will also block and seal every air vent to prevent mold spores from accidentally being transferred to another room through the HVAC system.

Now come the cleaning and removal. If the mold has not grown extensively, it may be possible to clean walls, floors, and furniture without requiring to remove items from the affected area. We prefer to do this if possible as it's the best way to prevent mold spores from escaping to unaffected areas of your home. It also reduces any inconvenience to your household. We have a large inventory of chemical cleaners and tools that allow us to remove mold without damaging the surface of most furniture and carpets. During the cleaning process, technicians use commercial vacuums with specialized HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters that are designed to trap mold spores, dust, and fungi parts.

If the mold has had time to grow into building material, then it will be necessary to remove certain items. Sheetrock is a very useful material for walls, but it is also very vulnerable to mold as a source of food. Panels are pulled out and cut down so they can be double-bagged for easy removal and disposal. Furniture and other property that has become too infested with mold will be removed and disposed of as well.

Finally, if the moisture level is still too high at the end of the cleaning, we will set up a series of dehumidifiers and space heaters to lower it. The goal here is to get the air moisture level of materials down to under 12 percent. This stops mold growth and returns the spores to a dormant state.

This is the ideal time to examine your residence for mold. If you already smell that musty odor which is the first sign of a potential problem, call us today at (321) 264-0205. SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach-Titusville is here to help.

Even if you think you have removed all the mold from your home, the chances are good that you have missed vital areas where mold will soon reappear and spread.

Professional Mold and Odor Elimination Services

A mold damage restoration crew will begin by conducting a full inspection of your property to establish where mold has grown, and then work to eradicate it as much as possible. This will include a full search of your A/C and heating vents as well as your water filtration system. Only when the structure has been rid of visible mold will it be declared safe to inhabit again, if the infestation was widespread. Mold spores will always be present in normal, safe levels within a home. After the fungi have been removed, the IICRC certified restoration team will conduct a full purification of affected areas to remove the musty odor of mold and to sanitize all elements of the building. Our goal is to establish an IAQ, indoor air quality, to a pre-loss level.

The Benefits of Restoring vs. Replacing

A reputable mold damage restoration company like SERVPRO will tell you that it is better to restore rather than replace your belongs and building materials. There are many reasons for this, especially if your family wants to stay in its accustomed home rather than in a motel while you pay the additional expenses involved in replacing rather than repairing or restoring.

Stop Mold Growth in Your Business HVAC System

4/30/2016 (Permalink)

When mold becomes a problem for your business, your HVAC system is often the source of the trouble. HVAC systems can not only contribute to mold growth themselves but also transport mold spores throughout your building.

Mold thrives in warm and damp conditions, with access to ready food sources such as drywall, carpeting or wood. HVAC systems, which include drain pans, coils and piping, are excellent sources of indoor moisture if they are not properly installed, operated and maintained. Once mold spores find a damp location in which to grow, indoor environments usually offer moderate temperatures and plenty of food.

When you think of who to call for any of your Remendiation needs, water loss, mold remediaiton, fire loss, carpet cleaning or HVAC duct cleaning, please call SERVPRO of New Smyrna Beach -Titusville.

Mold Remediation for Your Titusville Home

Mold  is a type of fungus that grows on a variety of surfaces in damp and dark environments. Like other fungal growths, mold spreads by releasing invisible spores into the surrounding air. These spores then settle on new surfaces. The spores can also remain in the air for long periods and may repopulate mold colonies on surfaces that were previously cleaned. Titusville mold can come in a variety of colors. Blue molds are usually non-toxic, but red, orange or black molds are very hazardous.

Mold Removal

The quick and complete removal of a mold colony is the only way to protect against the health hazards of mold. Mold can be scrubbed away with hot soapy water for a quick fix. Control of moisture will lessen mold growth, but mold is notoriously difficult to eradicate. Hiring a professional service, such as SERVPRO, will ensure that mold is cleaned away completely and that the initial cause of the mold growth is fixed. Cleaning the air in the home is also important to eliminate airborne spores that may repopulate the mold. Air purifiers or filters are effective at eliminating spores.
